Following on from its unveiling back in January during CES 2017, Intel has this week announced that its new Intel Compute Card will start shipping in a few months time during August 2017.
LG and Sharp will focus on smart monitors and digital signage, respectively, while Foxconn and other companies like ECS, Seneca and NexDoc, are developing miniature desktops and all-in-one PCs that can be easily upgraded by swapping out Compute Cards.
We've known about Intel's Compute Card since CES in January, but Intel waited until Computex this week to officially reveal what we can expect in terms of specs and options.
Intel has launched Compute Card, a slim, modular PC that it wants other brands to incorporate into connected things, such as kiosks, smart TVs, different form factor PCs, and home appliances. Other partners now working on solutions, but not yet in a position to display their work, include Dell, HP and Lenovo.
Intel also showed a prototype laptop for students that's powered by a Compute Card.
Despite its small size, there's enough space to fit one of four Intel processors, from a Celeron up to a Core i5. All configurations use 4GB of memory and feature 802.11ac and Bluetooth 4.2 connectivity. "The applications are endless - smart screens, interactive appliances, smart factories and more - and it's a flawless complement to everything else we are doing to bring more compute power and connectivity into the home and beyond".
It's uncertain yet if Intel's standardized plug-ins will take off, (pricing details are being saved for a later date) but we're definitely intrigued by the concept and will keep an eye on where Intel's micro-PCs take it next.
