IT Dept. slaps benami transaction charges against Lalu's family

The registration of charges comes a day after Income-Tax Department seized Benami properties of Misa Bharti, her husband Shailesh Kumar and Bihar deputy CM Tejashwi Yadav in the case, according to news agency ANI. "Political vendetta ke aadhar par ye galat baatein chalaai ja rahi hain, (All these false allegations are being spread on the basis of political vendetta)" Tejashwi Yadav said.
Bharti and her husband Shailesh were also summoned by the department for questioning in this case in the past but the couple skipped the dates.
The IT department said it has attached farm houses, land and buildings in Delhi and Patna, including plots in the Bihar capital where a mall was to be built.
Tax officials allege that the politically influential family acquired companies that own these properties at prices much lower than market value. A benami transaction is one in which the real beneficiary is not the one in whose name the property has been purchased.
"Investigation is ongoing and necessary action has been taken today (Monday)", said an I-T official, requesting anonymity.
The summons were issued days after the arrest of Bharti's Chartered Accountant (CA) Rakesh Agrawal, in connection with an Enforcement Directorate probe into a Rs. 8,000 crore money laundering racket, involving two Delhi-based businessmen and a few political entities. He has said in statements that he is "not scared at all" and will "continue to fight against fascist forces".
The BJP had also accused Mr. Prasad, Ms. Bharti and his sons Mr. Tejashwi and Mr. Tej Pratap, both Ministers in the Nitish Kumar-led Bihar government, of involvement in corrupt land deals worth over Rs 1,000 crore, and asked the Central government to probe one such transaction in Delhi.
