Hierholzer says Hawkins told doctors that the girls collapsed while smelling flowers.
The children, Brynn Hawkins, 1, and Addyson Overgard-Eddy, 2, were in grave condition. The children were left in the vehicle overnight, until around noon on June 7.
Two young Kerrville children died Thursday after being left alone in a auto for 15 hours. A 16-year-old boy, who was not identified in the police report, accompanied Hawkins to the hospital. Hawkins allegedly bathed the children in an attempt to avoid a hospital visit, police said.
However, Hierholzer said, investigators determined Hawkins had left her two children, 1-year-old Brynn Hawkins and 2-year-old Addyson Overgard-Eddy, intentionally inside a auto Tuesday overnight and until Wednesday around noon while Hawkins "and other friends were inside a residence".
Amanda Hawkins was arrested Thursday in San Antonio and is awaiting to be transferred to Kerr County, Kerr County Sheriff W.R. Rusty Hierholzer said in a statement. She is now charged with two counts of abandoning or endangering a child but the sheriff says they expect the charges to be updated since the girls died. But after Child Protective Service and Hierholzer's office were called to investigate the matter, it became clear that wasn't the case. At the time of the press release, Hawkins was charged with two felony counts of abandoning or endangering a child.
Hierholzer said the investigation is continuing and he did not rule out others being charged in connection with the deaths.
Once Hawkins discovered the girls, investigators say she tried to bathe them and did not "immediately want to take the girls to the hospital because she did not want to get in trouble".
Both children died Thursday afternoon.
Her story quickly unraveled under questioning, the sheriff said. "This is the more horrific case we have ever had to deal with here". Now, with the death of the girls, the charges could be upgraded after this case is presented to a grand jury.
