Monk in as Middlesbrough's new boss

The coach's arrival and three-year contract was announced on Friday, and in his media unveiling at the Riverside Stadium he stated that Boro's return to the top-flight is the main ambition of his tenure.

Chairman Steve Gibson has done well to hire one of the most highly rated young managers in the English game, and Monk admitted Gibson played a key role in his decision to move to Teesside. His determination was something that really struck me.

Monk resigned from his position at Elland Road last month, a day after Andrea Radrizzani bought control of the club from Massimo Cellino.

He said: "It's important to make clear it was two separate situations".

The ex-Netherlands global also used to play for Leeds' rivals Manchester United during his playing career - something which has also come up with the Yorkshire clubs' supporters.

"To be honest, it wasn't right for me". "I won't go into the detail of it but there are things that didn't suit me." .

"I then became a manager out of a job and the next process was to find the right challenge at a club which ticked the boxes I needed".

However, the former Swansea boss is delighted to take charge at the Riverside Stadium and believes the foundations are in place for a promotion push despite a disappointing season in the top flight previous year.

The club are believed to be edging closer to an agreement with Leeds United over left-back Charlie Taylor. They are looking to Monk to take them back to the promised land.

The 23-year-old is a free agent this summer but the Baggies don't want to risk the uncertainty of a tribunal bill, and have been negotiating a compensation fee with the Championship club.
