The All Dulles Area Muslim Society (ADAMS), a local community center, said that its members saw the teenagers and directed them to their building.

Martinez Torres is charged with murder and being held without bond, police said. "No evidence has been recovered that shows this was a hate crime".

"That is the highest number since 2001, when the al Qaeda attacks on NY and elsewhere drove the number to its highest ever level, 481 hate crimes", according to Mark Potok with the Southern Poverty Law Center. The FBI defines a hate crime as a "criminal offense against a person or property motivated in whole or in part by an offender's bias against a race, religion, disability, sexual orientation, ethnicity, gender, or gender identity".

A group gathered in Dupont Circle to remember 17-year-old Nabra Hassanen on Tuesday, June 20, 2017.

Roessler says his detectives are waiting on forensic tests on the Muslim teenager's body, which was pulled from a pond on Sunday. "We are upset. Our children are not safe", she said.

"In the general area, it's very somber [and] we're obviously upset - people are sad, some are scared, some are concerned", he said. The teens scattered, but the man parked in a nearby lot and retrieved a baseball bat and began chasing them. His public defender, Dawn Butorac, declined to comment. Reports from the Federal Bureau of Investigation for 2015 reveal a seven per cent increase in hate crimes overall, while anti-Muslim hate crimes have skyrocketed, increasing by 67 per cent. Most mourners were Muslim, but Christians and Jews attended as well. "We have only each other", the imam said as he stood in front of Hassanen's coffin, covered by a black shroud decorated with quotes from the Quran. The young girl's death doesn't have to be in vain, as others show their support by advocating for true justice for her murder.

A Muslim teen who police say was killed by an angry motorist in northern Virginia is being described as a bright girl who was loved by her community. A GoFundMe is still raising money to cover the cost of Hassanen's funeral services.

A vigil and prayer service Tuesday night at the impromptu memorial was followed by iftar - the daily meal after sunset to break the daily fast that many Muslims observe during the holy month of Ramadan. He said the community is grieving, but needs to remain strong.

Torres caught Nabra and struck her with the bat, according to the statement. Torres became so enraged after arguing with one teen he drove up on a curb, police said.

Hundreds of people came to a funeral in Sterling, Virginia, this afternoon, for a 17-year-old girl who police say was killed this past weekend after she left her mosque.

Rizwan Jaka, spokesman for the ADAMS Center in Sterling, said he expected anywhere from 2,000 to 4,000 people to attend the funeral services for Nabra Hassanen.

Salaam said the community is struggling because Nabra was beloved by so many, and so well known for her kind spirit.

And Iman Boshra, whose daughter was one of Nabra's many friends, remarked in the outpouring of support and concern. Why, when my daughter fell down, why did he hit her?

At the news conference, when asked whether Torres said or shouted anything during the altercation with the teenagers, Lt. Bryan Holland said, "There was no indication of any racial slurs or any type of back and forth other than a verbal argument".

Fairfax County Police said they don't have any evidence that points to a hate crime. Then, they say, he put her in his auto, assaulted her again and dumped her body.

Fairfax County Police said the murder is not being investigated as a hate crime. A vigil also is planned for Wednesday in Hassanen's hometown of Reston, Virginia. He's being held without bail on a charge of murder.
