"Max-Q", as Nvidia is calling its holistic philosophy, hardware design and software tweaks, has its roots in NASA tech - "the point at which the aerodynamic stress on a rocket in atmospheric flight is maximised", apparently, a particular set of criteria that everything has to be created to accommodate.

What is Max-Q Design?

When the complete design is implemented, NVIDIA claims that Max-Q laptops are just 18mm thick. Fortunately, the leading GPU maker, NVIDIA has new plans to accost these hurdles, and it is beginning by launching a new technology called "Max-Q". All told, instead of operating with maximum performance or with maximum battery life, Max-Q Design is meant to optimize game performance at the GPU's peak efficiency point, to balance performance, thermals, and power.

They will be engineered with sophisticated thermal and electrical design in order to maintain a thin footprint yet keep cool and quite in operation.

There's a reason gaming laptops are thicker. Last year, we saw the release of external graphics card enclosures to boost the gaming capabilities of notebooks and this year, Nvidia is making a big play on integrating some of its most powerful desktop graphics processors into laptops.

Not only did we get some major announcements from Intel at Computex today but Nvidia has also taken to the stage with a rather bold announcement. It paces a game's frame rate while adjusting graphics settings to optimise power efficiency.

One problem with shoehorning powerful graphics into a thin gaming laptop is noise levels. WhisperMode will be available soon through a GeForce Experience software update. Max-Q laptops will be available from June 27 from vendors including Acer, Alienware, Asus, Gigabyte, HP, Lenovo, Maingear, MSI, and Origin PC.

As a quick recap, at GTC, NVIDIA showed off the Volta-powered V100 compute card with its impressive 120 TFLOPS of tensor compute, Jetson TX2 cards for AI assisted robots, autonomous vehicles, and cloud compute. More recently, GPU deep learning ignited modern AI - the next era of computing - with the GPU acting as the brain of computers, robots and self-driving cars that can perceive and understand the world. This MSI features Max-Q but looks identical to the previous GS63VR. With NVIDIA's new design they intend to deliver the best possible gaming experience on laptops in the ultrabook form factor.
