The REAL ID Act was put in place in 2005 to improve the reliability of state issued ID's, making it harder for terrorists to obtain fake identification. The spokesman notes this will have no impact on people's ability to use their IDs to fly this year. In the meantime, the state has received one extension after another. Without an extension, Pennsylvanians will have to get another form of ID that complies with the federal Real ID law of 2005, such as a US passport.

Gov. Mary Fallin signed legislation this spring that brings Oklahoma into compliance with the federal law, but it will take time for the new licenses to be implemented.

The feds say Washington state's extension from the REAL ID Act requirements will expire July 10 - at least for now.

DPS has requested another extension from the federal government until October, then plans to continue to request extensions, as necessary, until the new driver's license system is operational, according to a DPS press release.

With the June 6, 2017 deadline upon us, agency leaders are hoping to hear from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security soon.

Tuesday, federal officials said they would make a decision in mid July on whether or not to grant the extension.

The enforcement grace period applies only to entrance to federal facilities. When REAL ID finally goes into effect, enhanced driver's licenses and ID cards will be required for admission to federal facilities like Vance Air Force Base.

Washington has an extension through the middle of next month. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation estimates that REAL ID-compliant drivers licenses and ID cards will be available my March of 2019.
