Premier League waits before deciding whether to probe Virgil van Dijk case

The Reds had become the favourites to sign the Dutch global in a deal that could have been worth potentially £50-60m, but those same reports became the foundation on which Southampton threatened to report Liverpool to the Premier League. The Reds subsequently apologised on their official website, with the apology being accepted by the Saints, meaning disciplinary action will not be taken by the Premier League.

But in their grovelling apology to Southampton, a statement read that they would end "any interest" in he highly-wanted star.

The summer transfer window has not even opened yet, and Liverpool are off to a humiliating start.

This is not the first time Liverpool have targeted a player from Southampton in recent years.

The former French worldwide looked nailed-on for a €50m move to Manchester City last summer, even though he was recovering from a broken leg at the time. That doesn't mean it will all work out but they are really positive and they all see the progress.

Southampton have consistently said they do not intend to sell Van Dijk, who joined from Celtic for 13 million pounds in September 2015 and signed a new six-year contract in 2016. Will he stay, will he push for a move to Liverpool or will he go to London or Manchester? I can see Manchester City paying the money for him due to the fact that their centre-backs are arguably worse than Chelsea's. The 25-year-old was linked with a move to Chelsea last summer, but ultimately made a decision to remain in Serie A. However, he has just one year left on his current contract, which could have a huge bearing on his value.

Van Dijk was a top class option for the Reds in central defence, and they may want to spend a little time identifying another quality alternative.

"If a club came in with a world record bid, it would be foolish for Southampton to turn that down".

They raised the issue with the Premier League. Efforts to sign Mohamed Salah have also stalled in recent days with Liverpool reluctant to meet Roma's asking price.
