Ramos-Vinolas looked tired at times in that set and Djokovic clearly had him on the ropes, but the Spaniard didn't go down without a fight.

Ramos-Vinolas' resistance in a 73-minute opening set, where Djokovic had his serve broken twice to trail 4-2 before fighting back to win the tie-breaker, indicated it could be another battle for the Serb.

It was the third round and Novak Djokovic nor Diego Schwartzman were taking aynthing for granted. Talking about his upcoming challenge against Dominic Theim, Djokovic said, "There's no easy match in a Grand Slam quarter-final, it will be very hard for both of us".

After completing a career Grand Slam previous year, defeating Andy Murray in the final, Djokovic is now looking to become the first man in the Open Era and just the third man in history to win each of the four Grand Slam titles twice, behind Rod Laver and Roy Emerson.

"I have to change something compared to the last matches", he said breezily. "Probably I didn't play as well as I did the other day, but I still played well." as reported by Firstpost.

The 31-year-old Nadal is chasing his 15th grand slam title and first since 2014 - when he won at Roland Garros.

Next up against Nadal is 20th-seeded Pablo Carreno Busta, who knocked off No. 5 Milos Raonic 4-6, 7-6 (2), 6-7 (6), 6-4, 8-6.

But he could not turn the tide and Djokovic moves through to a much-anticipated quarter-final clash with sixth seed Dominic Thiem.

The rain delay suited Kei Nishikori as he recovered to beat Hyeon Chung 7-5, 6-4, 6-7 (4), 0-6, 6-4 when their third round match resumed at the French Open.

Nishikori, 27, needed nearly four hours to win 7-5, 6-4, 6-7 (4-7), 0-6, 6-4 in a third-round match finished on Sunday after the previous days rain delay.

Kristina Mladenovic ensured the host nation will have two women in the quarter-finals for the first time since 1994 after dumping out fourth seed Muguruza 6-1, 3-6, 6-3. "I'd rather not say anything more".

Muguruza spoke afterwards of how baking helps her to relax away from the court: "I know in Wimbledon I will go to the same house".

Seven-time grand slam victor Venus Williams also bowed out, losing 7-5, 2-6, 1-6 to Switzerland's Timea Bacsinszky.

Meanwhile, No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki returned to the quarter-finals for the first time since 2010, eliminating 2009 champion Svetlana Kuznetsova, 6-1, 4-6, 6-2.

Four women's singles third round encounters still need to be played, including Czech second seed Karolina Pliskova against Germany's Carina Witthoeft and Ukrainian fifth seed Elina Svitolina versus Poland's Magda Linette.

Mladenovic, 24, will face 2015 semi-finalist Bacsinzky in the quarter-finals.

However, Garbine Muguruza crashed out in the last 16.

But Carreno Busta's victory over Raonic was just the first in 17 attempts against a top-10 player.
