Trump Confirms He's Under Investigation

New York Times sues FBI to get notes of Comey-Trump talks Trump Confirms He's Under Investigation

"I was going to fire Comey", Trump told NBC News in an interview taped May 11. "Witch Hunt", the president wrote in his tweet.

Trump fired FBI Director James Comey, sent out spokespeople and surrogates with a far-fetched cover story to explain the dismissal, and then told NBC's Lester Holt that the real reason for the firing was Comey's pursuit of the Russian Federation investigation.

This is not the first time the President has thrown his own aides and administration officials under the bus. Mueller also has expansive powers to investigate any matters that develop from his initial investigation.

The shift toward probing Trump began days after Trump forced former Federal Bureau of Investigation chief James Comey to quit last month.

If that is the case, it could be part of what appears to be a pattern of statements that are meant to back the president.

At a Senate Intelligence Committee hearing last week, Coats and Rogers refused to say whether Trump asked them to intervene in the investigation, which is also examining whether the Trump campaign team colluded with Russian Federation during last year's presidential campaign. "Regardless of the recommendation, I was going to fire Comey". Now, that's no longer the case. The special counsel can only be fired by Rosenstein, though the president could in in theory direct Rosenstein to fire him.

Who is the special counsel planning to talk to and why do they matter?

The statement came as word surfaced that Mueller is now reportedly looking into the finances and business dealings of Jared Kushner, President Donald Trump's son-in-law and adviser.

Yet Trump's angry tweets on Friday underscored the near-impossible challenge his advisers and legal team have in trying to get him to avoid weighing in on an active probe. This, too, could be a sign of the president acting inappropriately. The Post said investigators had requested interviews with CIA Director, Dan Coats, National Security Agency chief Michael Rogers and Richard Ledgett, the former NSA deputy director. He hadn't been asked by the White House to release the statement, which blasted the media's use of anonymous sources for major political stories, CNN reported.

During the Watergate scandal, former president Richard Nixon attempted to use executive privilege to hide information. He lashed out at a top Justice Department official overseeing the inquiry, reflecting his mounting frustration with the unrelenting controversy that has consumed his early presidency. The responsibility would fall to Congress to review any findings of misconduct. But Trump has implicated himself in the matter by saying he would have fired Comey regardless of the recommendation from Rosenstein - to ease pressure from the Russian Federation probe.

The president can be hard to predict, and one of his friends raised the possibility this week.
