Trump Says FAA "Didn't Know What the Hell They Were Doing".

Christy Curtis | 07 June, 2017, 04:58

Declaring the current system "stuck painfully in the past", Trump called for separating air traffic control operations from the Federal Aviation Administration, an approach that US airlines have long championed.

"Dismantling the current system will devastate [general aviation] while not accomplishing the desired goals of efficiency and technological improvements", the EAA said in a press release.

"The system will be much more quick to respond - be able to buy new equipment and not be tied up with appropriations from Congress to keep it running", said aviation expert Mark Weinkrantz.

Trump plans to push for the separation of air traffic control operations from the Federal Aviation Administration.

Separating air traffic control from the FAA has been discussed for decades.

"The president's leadership means that we can look forward to legislation that gets government out of the way so we can modernize for the future and maintain our global leadership in aviation", said Nicholas Calio, president of Airlines for America, which represents American, United, Southwest and others.

Trump envisions modernized operations to replace the current operation that he said is "stuck, painfully, in the past".

"This new entity will not need taxpayer money, which is very shocking when people hear that", President Trump said in a Monday news conference.

"I share President Trump's desire to make travel in America's airspace safer, more efficient and technologically advanced", Estes says.

Officials say Trump may not try to block Comey's testimony
Collins was discussing Comey's scheduled testimony - set for Thursday - before the Senate Intelligence Committee. I didn't even really talk to him. "That's the extent of my acquaintance with Mr Flynn", he added.

Earlier this year, Henderson Mayor Steve Austin was one of more than 115 mayors across the country signing a letter, claiming concerns over lack of congressional oversight of public air transportation infrastructure and over costs and access.

"I have been and will remain deeply involved in any and all discussions on the impact of aviation proposals on the FAA Tech Center and the men and women, who work there", LoBiondo said.

Steinberg admits that while the current ATC system is older and not always ideal, it keeps air travelers safe through some of the world's most complex air corridors in the U.S.

The idea would be to shift away from ground-based radar for everyday functions not related to national defense, and small-volume airports might not have an air-traffic controller in the tower.

In an attempt to gain support for the plan, which fell short in Congress a year ago, the White House said the corporation's board should be insulated from industry stakeholder groups.

"Traffic controllers have been doing a great job keeping us safe in the air", Lawson said.

The U.S. air traffic control system is in line for a major overhaul.

Currently, the FAA oversees about 50,000 flights per day.

Monday's announcement is part of a week-long series of proposals to overhaul the country's aging infrastructure as the White House confronts a growing probe into alleged ties between Trump's campaign and Russian Federation.
