Trump waives law requiring US move its embassy to Jerusalem

Lamar Ellis | 02 June, 2017, 02:20

It is beyond time for the United States to move the Embassy to Jerusalem.

Israel also plans to build a cable vehicle that goes over the old city of Jerusalem and is expected to change its historic and cultural character. The U.S. government, as a result, does not officially recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital. Moving the embassy risked infuriating Palestinians, who claim east Jerusalem as the capital of a future state, and inflaming regional tensions.

The Palestinian ambassador to Washington, Husam Zomlot, said the move "gives peace a chance".

Earlier this year, the president promised to move the embassy, which is a move supported by Israelis.

Trump had faced a Thursday deadline to determine how to proceed.

He has approved a waiver to defer relocating the embassy, as his predecessors have done every six months since 1995. But the president can waive the law if asserting that a waiver is in US national security interests. Trump told a conservative Israeli news outlet in January. "They thought it is not going to happen".

Johnnie Moore, a member of Trump's evangelical advisory board, referenced the image of Trump praying at the Western Wall and said most evangelicals are convinced that the president remains supportive of Israel, while needing to juggle broader issues related to peace and security in the region. Each side stakes claims to a city that plays a central role in Judaism, Islam and Christianity.

President Mahmoud Abbas' spokesman, Nabil Abu Rdeneh (nah-BEEL' ah-boo reh-DAY'-nuh), says the decision is an "important positive step" that illustrates the US seriousness about promoting peace.

"America's recognition of the capital city of our foremost and only democratic ally in the Middle East should not be a bargaining chip", said National Religious Broadcasters President Jerry A. Johnson, in a statement.

Donald Trump promises to move embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. that is, before his election as president.

The announcement came one week after Trump's visit to Israel and the Palestinian Territories, during which he met with leaders of both political entities. "Think about how upsetting to us it is that the USA doesn't recognize Jerusalem as our capital". Trump's decision came hours after administration officials said he was considering pulling the USA out of NAFTA altogether.

When Israel was established a year later, the US and other countries based their embassies in the Tel Aviv area instead of Jerusalem, out of respect for the United Nations plan.
