Trump's Twitter Adviser Gets Reprimanded For Tweet

Lamar Ellis | 10 June, 2017, 04:46

According to a complaint filed with the White House Office of Special Counsel by the left-leaning watchdog group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, Scavino's tweet crossed the line.

An independent prosecutor's office has warned a White House aide that his Twitter threat to target U.S. Rep. Justin Amash of MI for defeat in 2018 violated federal law.

"Dan Scavino's tweet does not violate the Hatch Act as it clearly comes from his personal account and not his official White House account".

Scavino violated the law, called the Hatch Act, with a tweet in April calling for President Donald Trump's supporters to defeat GOP congressman Justin Amash in a primary.

The Hatch Act prohibits federal employees from using their government positions to publicly support or oppose political candidates.

The April 1 violation occurred in the middle of an intense debate over repealing ObamaCare that pitted the Trump administration against Amash and other members of the Freedom Caucus.

Scavino is one of the president's most loyal and longest-serving aides in the White House.

CREW Executive Director Noah Bookbinder said in response to the decision, "OSC has made clear with this ruling that they are going to enforce these important rules and work to keep the government free from inappropriate politics". On social media, that means no campaigning while on duty or while using a professional account. [Justin Amash] is a big liability.

Scavino's Twitter account at the time featured photos of him standing in the Oval Office and of Trump delivering a speech behind a lectern with the presidential seal, CREW complained.

The Office of Special Council said it had not observed further violations by Scavino since the post about Amash, but that the social media director had been warned that future violations would not be seen as inadvertent.

The Office of Special Counsel agreed that the tweet violated the Hatch Act.
