Mr Erdogan met Trump at the White House on Tuesday, with the two leaders pledging to improve ties between the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies - even as Mr Erdogan gave a stern warning about Washington's arming of Kurdish militia in Syria.

Turkey also accused the protestors of belonging to a terror group known as the PKK. -Turkish tensions that are compounded by a growing spat over US policy in Syria.

"I ask that you immediately look into this matter and bring all appropriate charges before these individuals leave the United States".

PRESIDENT TRUMP laid out the welcome mat this week for Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and the strongman apparently felt so much at home he thought it okay for his thugs to beat up peaceful demonstrators.

The US State Department has confirmed that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's security detail was behind the attack on Kurdish protesters in Washington, DC on Tuesday. Video of the melee showed suited men believed to be working for Erdogan attacking protesters in the street outside of the residence.

The aide said two members of Erdogan's security detail were detained on the scene Tuesday by diplomatic security agents. Under global law, foreign officials and their traveling detail can not be detained. The department says the ambassador met Wednesday with Tom Shannon, the acting deputy secretary of state and highest-ranking career US diplomat.

The US state department said Turkish security guards had been involved in the clash but Turkey blamed the protesters for the disturbance. "This kind of thing can not go unresponded to diplomatically", the senator said in an interview with MSNBC.

Speaking on Turkish television, foreign minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said: "Brett McGurk, the USA's special envoy in the fight against Daesh (Islamic State), is definitely and clearly giving support to the PKK and YPG". After the violence, Arizona Sen.

"The next time they could kill us easily".

The statement added that, "Turkey is a key NATO Ally that faces legitimate domestic security concerns emanating from ISIS, PKK, and other designated terrorist organizations". Kheirabadi said he is a Kurd who passed through Turkey as a refugee and is now a US citizen.

Last week, the Trump administration announced that it would arm the YPG - as a delegation of high-level Turkish military and intelligence officials were visiting Washington in advance of Erdogan's meeting with Trump.

The newspaper editorial team called them "thugs", and called for a stronger USA response, including the dismissal of Embassy staff from the country.

Social media posts by the two suspects suggest that Necmi is a supporter of Erdogan who came to Washington to celebrate his visit whereas Kheirabadi is a supporter of Kurdish causes. Such groups will "have no safe quarter", Trump said.

The Associated Press says they spoke with a congressional aide, who was not authorized to speak publicly and requested anonymity to discuss the situation.
