White House press secretary Sean Spicer speaks as cameras are pointed away during an off-camera media briefing at the White House in Washington, Monday, June 26, 2017. White House Correspondents Association President Jeff Mason met with Press Secretary Sean Spicer late last week to protest the changes and to urge a return to the previous status quo.

"Jousting with the press secretary doesn't really get us that far to understanding things better, ' Isaacson said, adding that it made "total sense" to have more weekly presidential press conferences and background briefings that last hours instead of people trying to "joust on camera".

Later, a reporter asked about the "drastic shift" in the way briefings are handled as reporters piled on Spicer.

"This important subject", Spicer replied as he began walking quickly down the street and toward the White House - as a gang of reporters followed behind. This past week, he gave interviews to Ainsley Earhardt and Pete Hegseth of "Fox & Friends", a talk show so friendly to the president that CNN media reporter Brian Stelter described it as a Trump "infomercial".

The Bush administration's Ari Fleisher joined former Clinton spokesman, Mike McCurry, in calling for and end to live television coverage of White House press briefings. Acosta tried to interrupt again, with Spicer attempting to move on. Televised briefings had been a near-daily occurrence for decades.

Some news outlets have considered defying orders or boycotting, but reporter April Ryan cautioned that there could be serious repercussions, potentially giving the White House exactly what it wants: less media to hold it accountable.

CNN senior White House correspondent Jim Acosta has had a public meltdown over the new rules, sounding the alarm that the administration wants "their evasive answers not saved for posterity". Has it been the fake news media?

But in recent weeks, he has suggested he may do away with them altogether.

Acosta had to tweet a final fuck you after the briefing wrapped up. "But O'Keefe's brand of journalism has repeatedly been called into question - both for his methods and the way his videos are edited".

The White House's intent is clear - to control the narrative closely, knowing there is absolutely no loss for the administration in its strong-arming.

"It's a crisis. The least you can do is turn your camera on".

"By getting rid of press briefings they're undoing their own initiative", the source said.
