Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice as Real Madrid beat Juventus 4-1 in a memorable Champions League final full of attacking verve and brilliant goals on Saturday as the Spaniards won the title for the third time in four years and 12th in all.

The impressive win crowned a remarkable first full season in charge for former Real midfielder Zidane, who led the team to a first La Liga title in five years, delivering the club's first European Cup and league double since 1958.

However, with Modric's steadying influence increasing, the tide turned in favour of Zinedine Zidane's side and they stormed to victory, firing more goals past Buffon than the three he had conceded in the rest of the tournament.

"We are disappointed", goalkeeper Buffon said in comments published on the website of European governing body UEFA. "We are a very good team and we deserved to win the league and the Champions League, it's not been an easy job".

"Nobody has won two Champions League in a row and we did it. We pressed a lot more and physically we won the game there too, so I'm very happy".

Thousands of people had gathered in Piazza San Carlo to watch the match pitting Juventus against Real Madrid on giant TV screens.

"In the second half their class, strength and how accustomed they are to winning these games showed through".

Ronaldo stopped a bright Juve opening in its tracks as he swept in Dani Carvajal's pass after 20 minutes, before Mario Mandzukic levelled with one of the great Champions League final goals, firing a sublime overhead kick beyond Real goalkeeper Keylor Navas.

A long-range deflected effort by Casemiro and a neat finish by the irrepressible Ronaldo effectively settled one of the most entertaining finals for years, a late tap-in by substitute Marco Asensio adding the final gloss.

"In the first half we played beautifully".

"We managed to defend for 15 minutes".

"I told the players to keep what they were doing but to play wider and put more pressure on them, and I said that when we got the ball play as you know how", Zidane said.

"As a team we played very well in the quarter-finals, the semi-finals and today, but you need a guy to score the goals and he did it again". In the run-up to the final, it sounded like Juventus were favourites and were playing a team who'd reached the final by chance. If somebody wins the Ballon d'Or and scores so many goals, obviously it's a big advantage.

"The root cause of this was panic, to understand what triggered it we will have to wait a while", said top local official Renato Saccone, the prefect of Turin.

"It's a long season, but I'm motivated, I'm happy".

"It's been an extraordinary season".
