"This is a great day for Tesla", said Musk before he turned over the first 30 Model 3s to employees who had ordered the new auto. Tesla boss Elon Musk has made a few announcements about the new compact auto that will seat five adults, but he may have a few surprises up his sleeve.

Tesla founder Elon Musk stepped out to cheers and applause Friday evening as he unveiled the brand new Model 3, the company's affordable vehicle.

Tesla will report its quarterly earnings on Tuesday and we'll be looking out for more information on the company's production plans.

After making electric cars the norm by launching expensive models like Model S and the Model X SUV, Tesla had officially amped up the game by launching a new model at $35,000 which has instantly grabbed the attention of many. "If you're trying to make a difference in the world, you have to make cars that people can afford".

Customers who pre-ordered the Model 3 will be contacted when Tesla is ready to produce the auto. Tesla 3 sales are likely to overwhelm that sales pace in a few months. "We are building the cars as fast as we can".

"If we did anything to even not put the brake on demand, it would go bananas", Musk said.

Still, Musk said he's expecting "at least six months of manufacturing hell" as the Model 3 ramps up to full production. You'll just need to plunk down $5,000 for the Model 3 to get it to "match speed to traffic conditions, keep within a lane, automatically change lanes, transition from one freeway to another, exit the freeway and self-park at your destination", according to the company.

A troubled Model 3 launch could heighten the risks for the company, while a steady delivery of Model 3s could generate a stream of cash that would allow Tesla to avoid going again to the capital markets to fund its operations.

Musk aims to make 500,000 vehicles next year, a number that could help Tesla finally make money. Customers can also spend a little more for the $44,000 long range version, which offers a 310 mile range, top speed of 140mph, and 0-60mph time of 5.1 seconds. And a fully loaded Model 3 with 310 miles of range costs a hefty $59,500; the base model goes 220 miles (322 km) on a charge.

The five-seat Model 3 starts from $35,000 in America, and is likely to cost £35,000 in the United Kingdom, when prices are announced.

CEO Elon Musk said Tesla has taken down more than 500K advance orders for the Model 3. It's such a good deal, in fact, that we'd be surprised if most Model 3s weren't so equipped, which raises the non-black EV to $41,000.

Perhaps the most surprising change is the fact that the vehicle doesn't have a key fob.

Half a million reservations have been made for the vehicle, the company says, up from about 373,000 disclosed in April 2016.

And with the arrival of the Model 3, which secured an estimated 500,000 pre-orders, the pressure is now mounting on the traditional automakers to quicken the pace in bringing their electric cars to market.
