Here's how the police statement said that the call was made: "Barros asked the victim, "Did you call the sheriff?' This question, based on the victim's statements, prompted a smart home device known as "Alexa" [sic] to contact law enforcement".

Barros reportedly had a firearm and threatened to kill his girlfriend.

A smart home device, initially identified as a Google Home but later updated to not say what brand it was, was hooked up to a surround-sound speaker system and recognized Barros' words as a command and called 911, Bernalillo County Sheriff Department's spokesperson Felicia Romero told ABC.

While the smart home speaker played an important role in this incident, it's also a notable reminder of, for better or worse, how assistants like Amazon's Alexa and Google Home are becoming smarter and can always be listening within your home.

While Google Home was a hero in this particular case, these kinds of stories certainly leave some people uneasy.

A SWAT team and negotiators were called in and eventually managed to get him to give himself up, police said. Expect more to come as smart speakers become more widespread.

Barros faces several charges, including being a felon in possession of a firearm and aggravated battery and assault with a deadly weapon.

Bernalillo County Metropolitan Court spokeswoman Camille Baca said Barros appeared Wednesday (5 July) in the Albuquerque court, where a judge ruled there was probably cause for his arrest.

After police arrived at the residence, they negotiated with the man for hours and were able to take the man into custody peacefully. "This awesome technology definitely helped save a mother and her child from a very violent situation". Police in OH used data from a pacemaker to charge a man with arson and insurance fraud.

FIRST IT was Amazon Alexa holding vital evidence in a murder trial. For example, Amazon's new Echo Show, which comes with a touchscreen and camera, allows an Echo Show user to "drop in" on another. The operator heard a confrontation in the background - presumably from a violent domestic dispute involving Eduardo Barros and his girlfriend.
