Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport, Washington Dulles International Airport and Reagan National Airport were affected.

Flights into and out of three airports in the Washington region were impacted because of a construction-related evacuation at a Federal Aviation Administration facility in Virginia Monday. Because of the fumes the facility stopped new flights and handed off flights in the air to other air traffic control facilities.

Airport officials say the FAA air traffic control facility in Leesburg was evacuated at around 6:40 p.m. ET after becoming filled with fumes released by construction work at the facility.

BWI Marshall is in a ground stop due to evacuation of an FAA enroute center. The area is being ventilated and it is unknown at this time when the air traffic controllers will be able to reoccupy and resume work. No planes coming or going. The facility handles high altitude flights around the DMV. Delayed flights are starting to depart.

FAA spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen said that they "expect to resume normal operations in the morning", according to WTOP.

The Hortons had to retrieve their luggage and spend three more hours in line to rebook a flight before returning to the airport Tuesday. Some airlines offered change waivers.
