Branden Grace shoots 62 at British Open to set majors record

Connie Andrews | 23 July, 2017, 00:11

South African golfer Branden Grace seized it to shoot 62 for the round, the first that has ever happened in major championship history.

Grace, the world number 35, picked up eight birdies in a flawless third round to move to four under par, two shots behind leader Jordan Spieth.

Phil Mickelson and eventual victor Henrik Stenson both shot 63 in last year's Open at Royal Troon, while Justin Thomas became the 29th player to achieve the feat in last month's US Open.

Grace went out in 29 and only needed a par at the last to achieve the milestone, which he did by two-putting to send the crowd into raptures.

Grace, whose caddie told him of the record after he holed out at the last, added: "I feel I'm playing well". This beats Grace's best round in a major (64, R3 of the 2015 PGA Championship) and also beats his career-best round on the PGA TOUR (63, R1 of 2016 WGC-HSBC Champions).

When Justin Thomas shot the last 63 at a major, at the U.S. Open a month ago, Miller was immediately sought out for comment.

Branden Grace entered the third round of the 2017 Open Championship at four-over par, making the cut by just one stroke.

"I honestly didn't. You know, I was just so in the zone of playing, hole after hole", he said at the end of his round. "I knew I was obviously playing really well, and making the turn in five-under was pretty special", he said. But through 441 events and 157 years, the 62 remained ever elusive.

"You never know what's going to happen tomorrow but I figure I'm going to need to shoot, probably, nine under". His career low round in a PGA Tour-sanctioned event was a 63 at the WGC-HSBC Champions event past year. "I hit a great wedge in there, just caught a fly, a little bit of a jumper and made it tough for myself". Grace admitted that his caddy informed him afterward that his round was one for the history books. "So obviously he must have known", he said.
