'China must teach India bitter lesson'

Since the standoff on June 6 Chinese media have carried several pieces blaming India for escalating border tension. In 'China must teach India bitter lesson'

Although China and Bhutan have spent decades negotiating the precise border without serious incident, the tiny Himalayan kingdom sought help this time from its long-time ally, India, which sent troops onto the plateau.

"The 1890 convention said the Sikkim section of the boundary commences from East Mountain and the incident took place about 2000 meters away from Mount Gipmochi", Shuang said.

In the early 1950s, China, India and Myanmar initiated the Five Principles of Peaceful Co-existence, featuring mutual respect for each other's territorial integrity and sovereignty, non-aggression, non-interference in each other's internal affairs, equality and cooperation for mutual benefit, and peaceful co-existence. The move demonstrates India's interest in building bridges with its Southeast Asian neighbours, a policy which will likely anger China, who disapproves of India's growing involvement in the region.

China claims the Doklam area citing 1890 treaty between China and Britain while Bhutan claims the area as its own territory and India is supporting Bhutan's claim as per the agreement between India and Bhutan.

"Although the boundary between the two countries is yet to be settled, we have basic consensus on the boundary and there is no dispute between both of us that Doklam belongs to China" he stresses.

"It is not clear to us what exactly is the implication of your statement that the boundaries of Sikkim and Bhutan do not fall within the scope of the present discussion", Nehru wrote in a letter to his then Chinese counterpart Zhou Enlai on September 26, 1959.

"Actually we have been trying to explore ways to resolve the boundary questions with the Special Representative mechanism".

The spokesperson pointed out that the relevant actions of the Indian side has violated the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and trampled on global law and the norms governing worldwide relations.

WTI, Brent crude oil futures settle higher
He commented, 'Crude oil prices fell all the way back to their pre-production cut lows of November a year ago over the past month. Brent fell 0.1% to $48.71 a barrel on London's ICE Futures exchange in late morning trade in Europe.

"But this incident I believe violates the spirit upheld by the special representative mechanism and also is in contrast to the efforts made by the two sides previously", he said.

The stand-off began on June 6 on a plateau next to Sikkim.

Tensions along parts of the 3,500km frontier that China and India share have simmered ever since the two sides fought a brief but bloody war in 1962.

China's ambassador to New Delhi, Luo Zhaohui, said Indian troops should "unconditionally pull back to the Indian side".

Following the face-off, China last week suspended the pilgrimage to Kailash Mansarovar in Tibet where Indians travel via the Nathu La Pass, which has been shut.

India has expressed concern over the road building, apprehending that it may allow Chinese troops to cut India's access to its northeastern states.

The comments by the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson come as the state-run Global times in a strong editorial said that China must teach India "a bitter lesson" if it "incites" military conflict over the dispute in Donglong region.
