ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski and Ramona Shelburne reported Saturday that the New York Knicks are progressing toward contract talks with David Griffin.

With Griffin's pull-out, Steve Mills will continue his work as general manager until the Knicks find a replacement.

A source told the Daily News that one of Griffin's requests was to remove Houston, who has been with the Knicks as a player or an executive for the majority of the last 20 years.

The belief that Houston is in line to take over as general manager is a long-standing rumor and if this latest report is accurate, it would seem to lend some validity to that.

The Cavaliers announced on June 19 that Griffin's contract would not be renewed.

The Post reported that Griffin wanted to hire his own scouting staff, while the Knicks' has remained mostly in place for years, even predating Jackson. However, less than 48 hours later, Griffin had withdrawn his name from consideration by the team, according to a person in basketball with knowledge of the situation.

Griffin was the general manager in Cleveland for three seasons and helped the Cavs to their first National Basketball Association title in the 2015-16 season.

Griffin was instrumental in turning the Cleveland Cavaliers into a powerhouse squad in the Eastern Conference.

So Griffin departed, immediately becoming a desirable option for any team looking for someone to run its basketball operations. Mills has been the Knicks' acting president since Jackson's departure and signed Hardaway Jr.to a surprising four-year, $71 million offer sheet last week. He was responsible for acquiring Kevin Love after LeBron James returned to Cleveland, and was part of the decision to make Tyronn Lue head coach in 2016 after firing David Blatt.
