Doklam has always been under China's jurisdiction: Minister

Doklam has always been under China's jurisdiction: Minister Doklam has always been under China's jurisdiction: Minister

On Monday, Colonel Wu Qian, a defence ministry spokesman, said India must not underestimate Beijing's determination to safeguard what it considers sovereign Chinese territory in the Doklam plateau.

"China's determination and resolve to safeguard national security and sovereignty is unshakable", Qian said at a press conference on Monday to mark the forthcoming 90th anniversary of the founding of the People's Liberation Army (PLA).

It's easier to shake a mountain than the PLA, Wu added.

The Indian Army is ready for a long haul in holding onto its position in the Dokalam area near the Bhutan tri-junction, notwithstanding China ratcheting up rhetoric against India demanding pulling back of its troops.

"The crossing of the mutually recognised global border by India is a serious violation of China's territory and runs against worldwide law", he added.

India has said the Chinese road project threatens its access to the corridor, while China has questioned why India should even have a say in a matter that concerns only Beijing and Bhutan.

Lu said, China hopes to maintain peace and stability of China-India border areas but reiterated his country will not make any compromise on its sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The Pentagon has stepped in just to the extent of asking both India and China to engage in direct dialogue on the Doklam issue, refusing to take sides as it were.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump's administration has said both Indian and Chinese governments must seek a peaceful resolution to the border tension through dialogue, sources told The Sunday Express.

There is a cold war-like situation between India and China and media in both countries are flexing their muscles, Gywali said in the House.

Interestingly, India has not stepped up the rhetorical offensive and after the first statements last month when its troops moved into Doklam following the construction of the road in Bhutanese territory by China, it has fallen relatively silent.

According to China, Indian troops have crossed into its territory to obstruct work on a road. "I want to stress that this is the precondition for any meaningful talks between the two sides", Lu said. She also said that China was trying to change the delicate balance at the tri-junction which hosts the borders of Bhutan, India and China.
