Developed in partnership with Johnson Controls, the swish looking GLAS thermostat was unveiled quietly via YouTube.
DESPITE not having a stellar reputation in the hardware market, Microsoft is taking on the mantle again in the name of its virtual assistant Cortana, in the form of a thermostat called GLAS. It's built by Johnson Controls, makers of the first electric room thermostat. However, it is not clear whether Microsoft plans to target both businesses and consumers with its thermostat.
In addition, the Glas can be controlled using Microsoft's Cortana voice-command system, although it has yet to be revealed how that will be integrated with the device. GLAS also runs on Microsoft's Windows 10 IoT Core operating system and features Cortana voice services. "Heating and cooling account for roughly 48% of the energy use in a typical US home, making it the largest energy expense for most families". In commercial buildings, heating and cooling account for 40% of energy usage.
Powered by Windows IoT Core, Cortana voice activation and Microsoft Azure, the thermostat is intelligent while also being gorgeous. Well we'll tell you what GLAS means. "Beyond the GLAS product, there is a tremendous opportunity brewing that goes beyond simple device integration and provides natural, human interaction with smart devices".
Despite numerous initiatives created to boost adoption, including making the platform available free of charge for single-board computers like the Raspberry Pi, commercial adoption of Windows 10 IoT Core has been slow-to-nonexistent. "GLAS constantly monitors indoor and outdoor air quality, and intelligently changes its settings - making it capable of providing leading energy savings".
