Fox News notes that "officers and agents from the U.S. Capitol Police, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Customs and Border Protection were involved in the arrest of Imran Awan at Dulles International Airport".

Collectively, Awan, his wife, and four of his relatives reportedly made $4 million working for more than two dozen House Democrats since 2009, according to the Daily Caller.

Awan's attorney, Chris Gowen, confirmed that his client was arrested at Dulles Airport on Monday.

"Awan clearly went to great lengths to cover his tracks, but it's unclear what his motives were", reporter Michael Sainato wrote. A Marine corps veteran and his Navy Officer wife now occupy the home and he discovered "wireless routers, hard drives that look like they tried to destroy, laptops, [and] a lot of brand new expensive toner".

Awan's wife and children left the US for Pakistan earlier this year, Politico reported.

Wasserman Schultz was forced to resign as chairwoman of the DNC a year ago after emails released by WikiLeaks appeared to show the organization working to unfairly support Hillary Clinton over her former rival Bernie Sanders during the Democratic primary process. According to Fox News, Awan has been charged with bank fraud. She has a return flight for September 2017, but the agent said that he believes Alvi has no intention of returning to the United States. FBI Special Agent Brandon Merriman said in the affidavit that the misrepresentations revolved around written assurances that the home serving as collateral for the loan was a "principal residence". Debbie Wasserman Schultz's information technology (IT) administrator, according to two sources with knowledge of the investigation. Awan was also ordered to turn over all of his passports.

In March, a group of House Democrats fired Awan and one other staffer over their alleged involvement in the scheme and the looming criminal investigation.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for August 21, according to Gowen.

Gowen says the federal bank fraud count stems from a "modest real estate matter" and is motivated by anti-Muslim bigotry.

"Mr. Awan previously served as a part-time employee but his services have been terminated. No charges, evidence or findings from the investigation have been formally shared with our office, so we can not comment on them", Fox News quoted Damron as saying.
