Jordanians took to the streets of Amman last week to protest against Israeli policies at the shrine.

Emerging from a mosque hundreds of meters (yards) away from the embassy, the protesters chant "Death to Israel" and "No Zionist embassy on Jordanian soil", an AFP correspondent says.

Jordan signed a peace treaty with Israel in 1994, but the Jordanian public largely views Israel negatively, especially in light of its continued occupation of Palestinian lands and its treatment of Palestinians under its control.

A security guard at the Israeli embassy in Amman, Jordan, opened fire killing two Jordanians after one of them attacked him with a screwdriver, Israel's Foreign Ministry said in a statement. The actual facts in this case matter less than the optics; what ordinary Jordanians saw was that an Israeli shot and killed two Jordanians, and Israel was demanding to bring him home without having to face an investigation or justice in Jordan.

An Israeli judicial source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said state prosecutors were giving "preliminary consideration" to an investigation, noting, "Theoretically, any outcome is certainly possible".

"Mohammed's blood did not flow in vain", he also said, pointing out that hours later, the metal detectors and security cameras that spurred violent clashes between Muslims and Israeli police were removed from the Muslim entrances to the Temple Mount.

The Palestinian Authority - the semi-autonomous Palestinian government in the West Bank - has cut all official contact with Israel over the situation at al-Aqsa.

Another Jordanian was wounded "in a shooting at a residential building inside the compound of the Israeli embassy", the police said in a statement.

The returning staffers included a security guard who shot dead a workman who stabbed him from behind with a screwdriver, plus another Jordanian bystander, according to Israel's account.

In early 2017, the newly returned embassy staff in Cairo were once again evacuated following security threats, and the embassy remains empty.

More than 300 Palestinians have lost their lives at the hands of Israeli forces in the ongoing tensions since the beginning of October 2015.

Israel shielded the guard in question under the Vienna convention, claiming diplomatic immunity. Local media reported it was part of a deal with Jordan to allow the embassy staff to leave.
