After trying to swallow an object, he later became ill and died in hospital.

Police officers could no longer be seen at the site of the clashes this evening but dozens of protesters, some masked, continued to line the streets.

Restaurants and bars pulled down their shutters and locked customers inside as police pushed protesters down Kingsland High Street and beyond Dalston Kingsland Station.

It comes just days after wheelie bins were set on fire outside Stoke Newington Police Station as protests turned nasty.

His death is also being investigated by the police watchdog.

Helicopters could be heard circling above as protesters launched fireworks at riot officers and police dogs.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission is investigating the case and said it will consider whether any misconduct or crimes were involved.

Abbott said: 'The anger and upset at the death of Rashan Charles is understandable.

"The family are in need of practical support in order to bury their loved one and pay the costs that they need in order to get #Justice4Rash, their son, for the brutal and unjust way he was slain", the fundraiser page says.

Protesters told pedestrians, motorcyclists and cyclists not to travel through the barricade.

Riots broke out in Hackney last night following a protest over the death of Rashan Charles. "Whatever the frustrations, this is patently NOT what the family of Rashnan Charles wanted".

Scotland Yard said "a number of items including bottles" were thrown at officers attending a "planned protest" from 3.40pm on Friday, close to Middleton Road.

Unverified footage on social media appeared to show at least one police officer attempting to restrain Charles on the floor of a shop.

Charles' family said that they were "determined to get answers" over his death and appealed for calm amid fears of further disorder.

The IPCC said a post-mortem into Da Costa's death revealed no signs of neck or spinal injuries but the investigation continues as the cause of death is yet to be established.

Campaigners claim Mr Da Costa's neck was broken and that he was "brutally beaten" after the vehicle, containing three people, was halted in Woodcocks, Beckton.

It shows the moments that followed after Mr Charles ran into the store, in Kingsland Road, east London at 1.45am after failing to stop for police.
