Rao played a key role in the launch of India's first satellite Aryabhatta in 1975.

U R Rao headed ISRO as chairman for a decade from 1984 to 1994.

Having trained under Vikram Sarabhai-the father of Indian space programme-Rao was an inspiration to both his contemporaries and juniors alike.

Former ISRO chief U.R. Rao not only inspired the country to aim for the stars, but also spent considerable energy bringing the stars to Bengaluru citizens.

"He just did not stop working". He was 85 years old.

Beginning with Aryabhata, India carried out at least 20 satellites project including Bhaskara, APPLE, Rohini, INSAT-1 and INSAT-2 series of multipurpose satellites and the IRS-1A and IRS-1B remote sensing satellites under his guidance, for providing communication, remote sensing and meteorological services. "He had a vision so clear that such hurdles could not stop him".

"Personally for me, a guiding spirit has departed", M. Annadurai, director of the Satellite centre at Isro, said.

Prime Minister Modi also expressed his sadness over the death of Rao. But the meeting went on for two hours. We take a look at the story of one of the main architects of India's space programme. Dr. Rao, 85, passed away at his Indiranagar home here around 3 a.m. on Monday.

Rao was now serving as Chairman of the Governing Council of the Physical Research Laboratory at Ahmedabad and the chancellor of the Indian Institute of Science and Technology at Thiruvananthapuram.

After graduation from Madras University and post-graduation from Banaras Hindu University, Rao went to the United States in the early 1960s to work in the faculty of MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) at Cambridge in Maryland and as an Assistant Professor at the University of Texas in Dallas. He has about 10 global awards and many more national awards. Among other positions that Rao has held, he is remembered for his tenure at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

He was honoured by being inducted into the Satellite Hall of Fame, Washington, on March 19, the first Indian to be inducted.
