Murray pulls out of Hurlingham

Lamar Ellis | 02 July, 2017, 00:50

World number one Andy Murray has pulled out of his first exhibition match at Hurlingham Club with a sore hip.

The 30-year-old's build-up to Wimbledon has been far from ideal.

He pulled out of Tuesday's (27 June) opening meeting with Frenchman Lucas Pouille due a hip problem, although was still expected to take to the grass on Friday.

The Murray camp, though, have downplayed the severity of the latest setback, insisting it is no more than "slight soreness in the hip" and his withdrawal today from a non-ranking match is only precautionary.

Murray is first on Centre Court and will play again on Wednesday if he wins his first-round clash.

The pair, who won the Australian Open and the US Open previous year, are now looking ahead to Wimbledon, where they reached the quarter-finals in 2016. This would seem to be more physically problematic.

"My feeling was that he was not picking the right shot because he hadn't played enough and that he didn't have the safety of saying: "OK, I can hit this shot 15 times in a row if I have to" and that all comes from competition".

Such a disjointed lead-up will not help Murray's chances at the Championships, which will be the most open for a long time. If anything, the scoreline of his 7-6, 6-2 defeat flattered him.

The Serbian top seed, competing during the week before Wimbledon for the first time in seven years, saved a pair of set points in the second set before finally putting Young away after a lengthy tie-break.

A third Wimbledon title will put Murray in a group that includes Briton Fred Perry, World No. 4 Novak Djokovic and German great Boris Becker.
