Quincy Jones Wins Big In Michael Jackson Music Royalties Lawsuit!

Wins Huge Cut of MJ's Hits Quincy Jones Awarded $9.42 Million in Music Royalties Dispute With Michael Jackson Estate

Legendary record producer Quincy Jones was awarded $9.4 million yesterday at the conclusion of his legal battle over unpaid royalties against the Michael Jackson estate.

The royalties and production fees come from some of Jackson's biggest hits, such as "Billie Jean" and "Thriller".

Jones claimed that for Jackson's Cirque du Soleil shows and the movie "This is It", the estate had cut up and reconfigured his work without permission, and then didn't pay for it. Jones said he had a contractual right of refusal to work on all that material.

The Jackson estate originally claimed that Jones was owed less than $400,000 and said he hadn't been paid due to issues with accounting.

"You don't deserve a raise", said Weitzman.

Quincy Jones met a 19-year-old Michael Jackson during the filming of 1978's "The Wiz", which would lead to one of the most fruitful partnerships in pop music.

According to a report from the The Hollywood Reporter, Jones was awarded $9.4 million in a trial where he said he was owed $30 million in royalties over songs from Off the Wall, Bad, Thriller and This Is It. They told reporters: "While the jury denied Quincy Jones $21 million - or more than two-thirds of what he demanded - from the estate of Michael Jackson, we still believe that giving him millions of dollars that he has no right to receive under his contracts is wrong". Court testimony revealed that Jones received around $18 million in royalties following Jackson's death.

They added: "Any amount above and beyond what is called for in his contracts is too much and unfair to Michael's heirs". Jones was irritated by this, saying producers get blamed for failures but artists get credit for successes. But it was actually what Jones sued for in the first place- $10 million- before upping the amount.

Jones took the witness stand last week - entering the courtroom in a wheelchair - to explain his views on how he was "cheated out of a lot of money" by the Jackson estate.

Lawyers for Jones argued "This Is It" counted as a "videoshow", per his contract, entitling him to a share of net receipts.
