State Dept.: Iran complying with nuclear deal but not 'spirit' of pact

Debra Rodriguez | 19 July, 2017, 01:00

Prior to the announcement, Trump met with senior security advisors including Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis, National Security Advisor Lt. Gen. H.R. McMaster and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Joseph Dunford, the New York Times reported. But on Monday the White House admitted that the Islamic Republic was sticking to the nukes agreement.

"We judge that these Iranian activities severely undermine the intent" of the agreement as a force for global stability, one official said. "His commitment to fixing these flaws remains steadfast".

The official criticized Tehran for a number of faults including support of terrorism that were not included in the nuclear deal that, comprehensively, keep Iran "one of the most risky threats" and "severely undermine the intent of the JCPOA". The sanctions also targeted what the U.S. says is a transnational criminal group based in Iran and three people associated with it, which the Treasury Department says stole software from the United States and other Western countries.

The new sanctions are not nuclear-related and do not violate the nuclear agreement with Iran, Free Beacon reported citing a USA official.

Trump's administration says Iran was meeting the conditions needed to maintain sanctions relief, but also announced it would punish more Iranians with other non-nuclear sanctions.

Mr. Obama has said the accord would prevent Tehran from developing nuclear weapons.

But unfortunately, he said, the USA has not complied, and the six parties to the agreement will be meeting in Vienna on Friday to examine Iran's complaints about the United States failure to carry out its obligations.

Meal Kits Take Amazon Deeper Into America's Kitchens
Blue Apron said in its IPO prospectus that it believes its cash and borrowing capacity will be sufficient for at least a year. Blue Apron went public at $10 a share on June 28, days after Amazon announced a $13.7 billion offer for Whole Foods.

"We receive contradictory signals", Zarif said when asked about the possible outcome of the review. That behavior has to stop. Our European allies want to work with us to interpret the agreement more strictly. "We expect they will be good partners on this".

Noting that Iran fought an eight-year war against Iraq in the 1980s during which it endured chemical weapons attacks with little sympathy from the rest of the world, Zarif said that "we need [the missiles] to make sure that another Saddam Hussein around the corner will not come and hit us again".

According to reports, the sanctions will not be nuclear-related and therefore will not violate the deal, which ensures the peaceful nature of Tehran's nuclear programme in return for the gradual lifting of sanctions.

Democratic Sen. Chris Coons of DE says Trump should sign those sanctions immediately if the House passes them.

"Drawing an analogy between the IRGC and terrorist groups and imposing the same sanctions on the IRGC would be a big risk to the United States and its bases and forces stationed in the region", Bagheri told a group of military commanders in Mashhad.

As a result, he said, the Office of Foreign Asset Control "has been reluctant to provide straight-forward answers to those who want to do business with Iran because it was anxious that a straight-forward answer would undermine the sanctions" that have not been lifted.

He did not give details on what form of risk he foresaw for USA forces and bases.
