Israeli police said they are barring men under 50 from entering Jerusalem's Old City for Friday Muslim prayers as tensions rose over new security measures at a supersensitive holy site.

Anger has spilled across the West Bank since last week when Israel shut the Al-Aqsa Mosque, venerated by Muslims and Jews, who call it the Temple Mount, following a deadly shootout.

"In and around the area of the old city there are thousands of police officers and border police units that will respond to any incident whatsoever", said Israeli Police spokesperosn Micky Rosenfeld.

Abbas further claimed that Israel, through its actions near Jerusalem's holy sites, was trying to turn the existing political conflict with Palestine into a religious one.

On Saturday, two Palestinians were killed as the Israeli forces moved to demolish the home of a Palestinian who allegedly stabbed the three killed Israelis.

Arab League chief Ahmed Abul Gheit "condemned the Israeli security forces excessive use of force and live bullets against unarmed civilians", said the Cairo-based organisation s spokesman, Mahmoud Afifi.

Zeid explained that the call is meant to coordinate the possible measures that could be taken by Organization of Islamic Cooptation (OIC) members over Israeli violations at the Al-Aqsa Mosque.

The AP, citing Israeli media, reported that the attacker was shot and wounded. Also, three Palestinians were killed and tens were injured on Friday during the clashes with the Israeli security forces.

It began when Israel placed metal detectors at Jerusalem's Al Aqsa mosque compound.

He called on the worldwide community, primarily the United States, to intervene to compel the Israeli government to maintain the status quo at the holy compound.

After a attack in which two Israeli soldiers were killed outside the al-Aqsa mosque over a week ago, metal detectors were installed at the mosque's gates.

By contrast, the Red Crescent reported at least 450 Palestinians were wounded in the demonstrations, almost half from tear gas.
