One of the tourists, Rabbi Menashe Zelicha of Bnei Brak, told Israel's Kol Chai radio station that Jordanian police told the visitors it was "forbidden" for Jews to pray in the country.

The killer of Mohammad [al-Jawawdeh] in the embrace of Netanyahu.

Mohammed Jawawdeh, 17, was killed on Sunday after he assaulted the guard with a screwdriver at the embassy compound, according to Israeli officials. Among the chants heard at the demonstration was "How attractive it is to kill soldiers in Jerusalem", Ynet reported.

The incident comes at a time of mounting tensions between Israel and the Muslim world.

Palestinian militant group Hamas praised the attack, saying: "We bless the heroic Halamish operation which came as a result to the Zionist occupation violations and crimes against our people in Jerusalem and al-Aqsa Mosque", the group said on Twitter. "There is no other explanation".

On Friday, about 8,000 Jordanians took to the streets of Amman to denounce the added security at the site.

The metal detectors were removed early Tuesday morning. The tensions have led to mass prayer protests and deadly Israeli-Palestinian violence.

Abdullah urged Netanyahu to cancel "new measures taken by Israel since the start of the latest crisis".

The statement said the building was in the Israeli embassy compound, but the Israeli media reports indicated that the building was not part of the compound.

Ziv thanked Netanyahu, "A big weight has been lifted off my heart".

It is believed that the Jordanian government is asking to conduct an independent investigation into the incident and has prevented Israeli embassy staff from leaving the premises.

Israel has imposed a ban on reporting the incident and has made no public comment.

Netanyahu said all diplomatic channels are being used, and that he's spoken numerous times to Einat Schlein, Israel's ambassador to Jordan.

The gunfire erupted on Sunday at a residential building where the embassy is located, injuring an Israeli guard.

The newspaper Haaretz says that Jason Greenblatt is expected to arrive on Monday in the Trump administration's first direct foray into the crisis. "And we are doing this determinedly and responsibly", he said.

Since then, Muslims have been praying outside the compound gates in protest against the controversial security measures. The ministers were reportedly reviewing the initial decision on installing the metal detectors and weighing possible alternatives.

Sabri told The Associated Press that "our position is that for now, nobody should enter" the shrine.

"They must know that they will be the main losers because we play an important role in assuring our security and theirs", Abbas said.
