"The US, with its risky military provocation, is pushing the risk of a nuclear war on the peninsula to a tipping point", it said, describing the peninsula as the "world's biggest tinderbox".

The US Missile Defense Agency said Friday it would soon test an anti-ballistic missile system in Alaska. A missile with multiple nuclear warheads cannot only do more damage to its target, but also pose a greater challenge for missile defenses.

Four US and South Korean jet fighters joined the live fire drill, which was conducted at a range in Yeongwol County, some 80 kilometres (50 miles) south of the inter-Korean border, the South's air force said.

TWO American supersonic bombers conducted live-fire drills in South Korea in a show of force after North Korea's launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile.

The U.S. bombers flew back to Guam alongside Japanese F-2 fighters over the East China Sea.

A commentary Sunday in the ruling party's Rodong Sinmun newspaper accused the USA of "reckless military provocations" and said the danger of nuclear war is reaching an extreme pitch.

"The US, with its unsafe military provocation, is pushing the risk of a nuclear war on the peninsula to a tipping point", it said, describing the peninsula as the "world's biggest tinderbox".

Pyongyang media described the move as a "provocation" that "may lead to the outbreak of a nuclear war".

"A simple misjudgment or mistake may lead to the outbreak of a nuclear war and that, in turn, is sure to lead to a new world war".

The Air Force, in a statement, called the mission a "demonstration of the ironclad US commitment to our allies".

Merkel told him that she hopes to caution U.S. President Donald Trump that a rapid response could lead to risky consequences.

But if we look at the ballistic missile, if confirmed then it would be a major step forward in developing a nuclear-armed missile that can reach anywhere in the United States.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in said the test indicated a quicker than expected pace of the North's ICBM program.

North Korea's launch of the ICBM marked a major step forward in its pursuit of a nuclear-tipped missile that could strike as far as the USA mainland.
