12 killed in Nigeria church attack

Victims of gunmen attack on Catholic Church Gunmen Attack Church In Southeastern Nigeria, 8 Killed
Christy Curtis | 07 August, 2017, 01:18

Anambra governor, Willie Obiano has said the shooting at St Philip's Catholic church in Ozubulu was caused by a feud between two brothers from the community who live overseas.

A witness said some gunmen, who concealed their identities with masks, broke into the church around 6am when the first mass service was holding.

On getting to the church, he had left and out of anger, probably, they rained bullets on worshippers in the church. According to him, the father of the man was one of those killed in the attack.

An eyewitness, who simply identified herself as a choir member, said that the church was dark as there was no light.

Unknown number of gunmen open fire inside a church in Nigeria's south, killing at least 12 and wounding several others.

Umar added that the injured were taken to the hospital in Nnamdi, the state's second largest city.

Initially, the police in Anambra state confirmed that only one gunman killed eight worshippers and injured 18 others in the attack.

Police officials described the incident as apparently related to a local dispute, rather than anything carried out by the radical Islamic terrorist movement Boko Haram.

Umar, however, explained that the attack was not unconnected to what he described as gang violence between some indigenes of the state.

Emecheta, who is the Managing Director of Anambra Signage and Advertisement Agency, said the losses from the attack were too much for the people to bear.

Boko Haram, a Nigerian militant group, has continued to attack soft targets in the country's northeast region.

The Commissioner of Police for the area, Garba Umar, told media outlets Sunday morning that no arrests have yet been made in the incident, but said police are convinced that the principal assailant was a local, since he was speaking an "undiluted" version of the Igbo tribal language.
