A student has been arrested after assaulting three fellow students and a lecturer in an unprovoked attack during a statistics lecture at the Australian National University in the capital Canberra.

Four people were injured after attempting to reprehend the attacker.

Three students and a female lecturer were "seriously" hurt and all four are in Canberra hospital with one believed to have a broken arm.

It's reported that the man, also a student, entered the classroom shortly after 9am this morning, injuring several students before being taken into custody.

"Police took the 18-year-old man into custody and there is no known ongoing threat to public safety".

Two female and a male classmates who came to her aid suffered injuries as they successfully wrestled the bat off him and restrained the suspect.

"I want to thank ANU Security and the ACT Police for their extraordinarily fast response to containing this isolated incident", Harding said in a statement.

"[It showed] incredible bravery on behalf of those students to protect the lecturer", he said, as quoted by the ABC.

Rumours whipped the university Asian students had been targeted in the attack, while Chinese Embassy staff visited the campus in the aftermath.

Fallout 4 VR, Doom VFR, and Skyrim VR Release Dates Announced
It's fairly easy to imagine how all three will play in VR, though Doom VFR in particular should be a very intense affair. And Fallout 4 VR will round out the company's 2017 VR schedule by launching exclusively on the HTC Vive on December 12.

The attacker had been a student of the statistics class for four weeks, Mr Claessens said. They then returned later to give it to the police, ' detective superintendent Cartwright said.

"It was just out of the blue".

"And obviously people were in a bit of shock so they ran out to get help before the guy - who wasn't coming down and was going a bit insane, to be honest - was restrained". The lecturer took the alleged attacker's baseball bat and opened the door to allow the students to run.

Classens said the student had appeared to be a normal person who did not raise any suspicions. "Nothing seemed odd about him", he said.

"Our first priority is always the welfare of our staff and students and counselling services were provided immediately to students and staff affected", ANU said in a statement.

"I'm a bit surprised, to be honest", said Claessens.

"I'm delighted and unsurprised to see such acts of bravery - we know one another, we really care for one another", she said.

"You can't exactly anticipate someone picking up a cricket bat in a statistics class".
