The largest trial over Turkey's coup attempt previous year started in Ankara on Tuesday, with 486 suspects expected to appear in court.

Considered the plotters' headquarters, the airbase was reportedly used to coordinate the coup and direct the bombing of key government buildings, reports the Washington Post.

Numerous 486 suspects face life terms in prison for crimes that include murder and attempt to assassinate Erdogan.

Several trials related to the coup are ongoing in Turkey.

Chief of Staff General Hulusi Akar and other senior commanders were held hostage at the base during the coup attempt, before they were freed on the morning on July 16. Anyone convicted is expected to get life imprisonment; the death penalty was abolished in Turkey in 2004.

On July 13, the country's Interior Ministry announced that a total of 50,510 people had been arrested and 169,013 had been subject of legal proceedings on coup charges since the failed coup attempt on July 15, 2016, which left over 240 people killed and some 2,000 others wounded.

Orders were allegedly sent out from Akinci air base, north-west of Ankara, to bomb parliament as troops attempted to oust President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Erdogan's government says the purge is needed to address Turkey's security challenges and to root out what it says is a deeply embedded network of Gulen supporters - who were once Erdogan's allies until they fell out in 2013. He denies the charges.
