Yingluck Shinawatra, ousted as Thailand's prime minister three years ago, failed to appear in court Friday to hear the verdict on charges that she was negligent in handling a rice subsidy for farmers that was the centerpiece of her party's 2011 election campaign.

Thailand's Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha ordered security authorities to check border crossings and search for former Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra on Friday, commenting "I thought she was courageous enough to show up", after she failed to appear for the ruling in her trial.

According to the sources, Yingluck travelled to neighboring Cambodia and then flew to Singapore, from where she boarded a flight to the Middle East. Her administration was removed in a 2014 military coup. "It isn't possible that she left the country without help", said Thanawut Wichaidit, of the red-shirt United Front For Democracy Against Dictatorship political movement that supports the Shinawatras, without offering any proof. A Thaksin spokesperson in Dubai did not respond to attempts by Reuters to Thaksin.

A verdict had been expected Friday in the case, in which Yingluck is facing charges of negligence linked to an ill-fated rice subsidy program that cost the state billions of dollars.

A judge says she asked for sick leave, blaming an ear problem. "The arrest warrant reinforces the idea that Yingluck and Pheu Thai were victims of the system", he said. He said a warrant would be issued for her arrest and postponed the trial until September 27.

Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam said the government "should not comment" on Yingluck's case and her whereabouts.

"I don't have the skill", Yingluck's older sister, Monthathip Kovitcharoenkul, 58, a businesswoman who had been talked about as a potential candidate, told reporters.

Man City beat Bournemouth 2-1

Meanwhile, Colonel Winthai Suvaree, spokesperson for the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO), said yesterday there had been no security meeting to address Yingluck's escape. "You must understand that the border is long ..."

Yet party insiders say it is too risky to float new leaders, given the disproportionate power of the military government to snuff out political careers.

The court is due to rule in the separate case on Friday of Yingluck's former commerce minister Boonsong Teriyapirom who is accused of falsifying government-to-government rice deals between Thailand and China in 2013. His government was also ousted by a 2006 military coup.

She has been vilified, called obscene names, had her bank accounts frozen, fined US$1 billion and faced 10 years jail - all for presiding over a failed government rice subsidy scheme to benefit farmers when she was in power.

Regardless of whether she is found guilty or innocent, Yingluck will not be able to run in that election because she was banned from politics for five years in 2015 by the junta's legislature for alleged graft in the rice-purchasing program. His supporters, who delivered him unprecedented electoral victories, believe his only offense was challenging the power of the country's traditional elite, led by monarchists and the military and supported by the urban middle class.

The mood in the northeast, a Shinawatra stronghold, was somber on Saturday.
