"We are sorry for the inconvenience caused to bank customers but they should appreciate that our strike is to defend their interests and common people's interests", Venkatachalam said. This closure has been called by the United Forum of Bank Unions. A few of the employees had also gathered in front of the Regional Office of Canara Bank in Nazarbad and staged protest.

The strike call was given by the UFBU, an umbrella body of nine unions in the Indian banking sector including All India Bank Officer's Confederation (AIBOC) and All India Bank Employees Association (AIBEA). The shared platform has also announced it.

However, private sector banks like ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, Axis Bank and Kotak Mahindra Bank, remained open today.

Franco said that all attempts to hammer out solutions to the demands raised by the unions bore no fruit, and hence, UFBU which claims a membership of almost 10 lakh across banks, made a decision to proceed with the proposed strike on August 22.

As many as 21 public sector banks control 75 per cent of the total banking business.

Weather warning in place with heavy rain forecast
Heavy rain is forecast across the south-west Saturday night and will gradually move up over the rest of the country. There will be a risk of low visibility in coastal and hill areas due to patches of rain, drizzle and fog.

CH Venkatachalam, General Secretary, All India Bank Employees Association, said in most of the places, clearing operations, particularly outward clearing, were badly affected.

Normally in the three clearing grids functioning from South, West and North - Chennai, Mumbai and Delhi - on an average about 40 lac cheques and instruments worth about Rs 20,000 crore are transacted per day.

"The decision of government has adversely affected the life of bank employees".

The UBFU has demanded the implementation of Parliamentary Committee, recommendations on the recovery of NPAs, stringent measures for recovery of bad loans, withdrawal of proposed Financial Resolution and Deposit Insurance (FRDI) Bill. Bankers also raised the issue of privatisation. Addressing the agitating bankers, Avnish Khosla flayed the Union Government for its "anti-public" sector and "pro-corporate" policies and delay in the wage revision.
