
The Eiffel Tower was evacuated last night because of incident with an armed a man who was arrested while trying to overcome the police, said Thursday.
The tower reopened on Sunday morning as usual at 9am. The alleged terrorist, of 19 years old, was captured when violating at 23:30 local time on August 5 one of the controls for access to the facility when he shouted of "Allahu Akbar" (Allah is the biggest), and a knife was seized with which he allegedly meant to attack the guards.
Under questioning, the suspect stated that he wanted to attack a soldier and that a member of the Islamic State extremist organisation had encouraged him to act, according to a source close to the investigation.
The tower, which lets visitors enter until midnight, was evacuated an hour later in what a police source said was a standard precaution.
Although a French national, the man was born in Mauritania, an African Arab nation, in 1998.
