That's not what South Africa's batsmen will want to hear.

At one stage the Proteas had England six down for 134 runs which placed England 270 ahead but Ali then put his foot down and when rain brought an early close, he had contributed an unbeaten 67 (59 balls, 8 fours and 3 sixes) to an England total of 224/8 which gave the home side an overall lead of 360 runs.

Bounce became increasingly unpredictable as the third day wore on, with many deliveries skidding through at shin height.

A flatness has crept into South Africa's play that has not served them well and could be hard to shake‚ and is the last thing they need with India on their way with Australia to follow before next summer is out. They were guilty of more dropped catches, with Dean Elgar putting down Keaton Jennings on nought and Moeen on 15.

Morne Morkel bowled a marathon eight over spell from the James Anderson End, removing Alastair Cook and Tom Westley.

England's only success in an away series in the past 30 years came back in 2010-11 when they had an Australian bowling coach in David Saker in their set-up.

With his Test place thought to be on the line, Jennings did not last much longer though as he edged Kagiso Rabada to slip to depart for 18, while Dawid Malan followed soon after when he was caught bat and pad off the bowling of Keshav Maharaj.

It would leave England searching to appoint a replacement before the start of this winter's Ashes in November, with former Australia bowler and Yorkshire coach Jason Gillespie a possible interim appointment for that series.

James Anderson, who put England on course of a series win against South Africa on second day of the final Test at Old Trafford, said he felt additional pressure when he took the new ball at the end that now carries his name but was delighted to end the day with four victims.

But Bairstow, rotating the strike well, went on the offensive, with his fine attacking innings including a superb straight six off Duanne Olivier.

Olivier's attempted pull ended in a top-edge which was safely gathered by keeper Bairstow.

Joe Root was making seemingly serene progress towards a fifty but fell one short in playing on from Olivier, who picked up a second as Ben Stokes - having earlier survived a half-chance to Heino Kuhn at midwicket - nicked to slip for 23.
