Justice Dipak Misra is new Chief Justice of India

He is succeeding Justice JS Khehar, who retired as CJI on Sunday.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has congratulated Justice Misra on taking oath as the new chief justice.

The new chief justice would preside over India' top court for the next 13 months. Mishra will complete his tenure of 14 Month on October 2, 2018. He became a permanent judge on December 19, 1997. He served in the latter capacity until he was elevated to the Supreme court on October 2011. He was also on the bench that rejected the appeal by 1993 serial blast convict Yakub Menon, seeking a stay on his death sentence. He also led the three judge bench who chose to hang four convicts in the horrific "Nirbhaya" rape and murder case which shook the entire nation apart.

One of Mishra's noteworthy decisions included directing all States and Union Territories to upload the FIRs on their websites within 24 hours of registration at police stations.

Mishra is a person who played key roles in numerous serious issues in the country.

-Justice Dipak Mishra headed the bench that had ordered mandatory playing of the national anthem before every movie in the theatre.

Justice Mishra began his career on Feb 14, 1977.

He was born in a family of intellects, jurists and politicians from a small town in Orissa. Misra ventured into most realms of law - constitutional, civil, criminal, revenue, service and sales tax matters - before being appointed as an additional judge of the Orissa High Court in 1996.
