Farah had already won the 10,000m last week with the 34-year-old the only GB athlete to have won an individual honour at the home championships.

That Farah gave it his all is undeniable: likewise that Muktar Edris of Ethiopia was the better runner on the night, getting in front of Farah on the last lap and simply never surrendering.

In his last track race Farah quickly went to the front of the race in order to keep the pace with the unsafe Chelimo.

Admitting he had been outmanoeuvred, Farah said: "I got boxed in early on - it doesn't normally happen - but I got boxed in early and couldn't get out". It's not an excuse, but it took a lot more out of me than I realised.

"Tactically, I was trying to cover every move", said Farah, after being consoled by his wife and four children at trackside.

Brighton won't roll over for Man City, says Bruno
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is convinced that Chelsea will sign a number of other players in the summer transfer window. The Manchester City boss has spent close to £200 million on new players this summer - four of which cost more than £40m.

Farah, a two-time double world champion and two-time double Olympic champion, finished in 13:33.22.

However, Edris and team-mate Yomif Kejelcha seized the initiative as the bell went and Farah struggled to go with them.

American Paul Chelimo added world bronze to his Olympic silver, timing 13.33.30. The better man won.

But when he starts his career as a marathon runner, Farah will be able to reflect on having created an fantastic legacy with his four Olympic and six World Championship gold medals.

Farah was welcomed to the start line by another roar from the London Stadium crowd and urged them to keep going with a wave of the hand in the opening paces. That he finishes with silver on the track clearly wasn't the farewell he had planned.
