Missouri, Illinois men among missing John S. McCain sailors

During the coming weeks, Navy investigators will try to set blame for the recent collision between an oil tanker and an American destroyer, the USS John S. McCain, near Singapore.

The sailors were aged between 20 and 39 years old.

Recurring problem After the McCain collision, the Navy ordered a one-day operational pause across the entire fleet to examine the root causes of the accidents. The Navy has released the identities of the sailors.

Kimball, who lives in Georgia, said that Hoagland has been serving on the USS John McCain for almost a year.

The collision sparked a multinational search and rescue operation off Singapore but it was called off after several days, and authorities shifted their focus to flooded parts of the ship.

Last Monday, the USS McCain became the second US guided-missile destroyer to collide with a commercial vessel in as many months. In January the 7th Fleet's Ticonderoga-class guided missile cruiser USS Antietam ran aground near Yokosuka, Japan, where the fleet is based.

Two bodies were identified last week, according to the US Navy.

In response to the US Navy's announcement, the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) said the Republic made a decision to suspend the multi-agency search and rescue operation from 9pm yesterday.

Aircraft, divers and vessels from Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, and the United States joined a search-and-rescue operation for the missing sailors over an area of about 5,500 sq.km.

Navy officials also said Wednesday that Seventh Fleet Commander Vice Admiral Joseph Aucoin was removed from his position after Admiral Scott Smith, Pacific Fleet commander, lost "confidence in (Aucoin's) ability to command".
