In neighboring Nepal, police spokesman Pushkar Karki were searching for 85 people reported missing after rivers burst their banks and killed at least 75.

At least 14 people were killed in a landslide in Nepal on Monday, taking the death toll in rain- triggered floods and landslides to 80 across the Himalayan nation, even as all the 35 stranded Indian nationals have been rescued, officials said. The monsoon, it added, was gradually getting weaker in the eastern region and moving towards the western region.

Of the 700 tourists stranded in Sauraha in the Chitwan National Park, almost 200 were from India and about the same number from other countries. Another 15,000 people had to leave their homes in the Bihar province, which borders Nepal and where the water level in seven rivers has reached dangerously high levels. Highways were either damaged or inundated, disrupting transport, Nepal police said.

Panchthar, Ilam, Jhapa, Morang, Sunsari, Sirah Sarlahi, Rautahat, Mahottari, Dhanusha, Sindhuli, Bara, Parsa, Makawanpur, Chitwan and Lalitpur have been badly hit by floods and landslides in the state.

Following the disaster, the Nepal Red Cross Society (NRCS) district chapters immediately deployed 448 trained volunteers to conduct rapid assessments and provide relief services to the affected people.

The Meteorological Forecasting Division has forecast moderate to heavy rains to continue across the country for the next few days. More than 1,000 houses were destroyed in floods that killed an estimated 400 livestock, the Kathmandu Post reported.

Five thousand and six hundred trained personnel of the Nepal Police, one thousand 700 APF personnel, and 8,300 Nepalese Army personnel, as well as helicopters, have been mobilized for search and rescue operation, the Ministry has stated.
