Justice Dipak Misra was on Monday sworn in as the 45th Chief Justice of India (CJI), succeeding Jagdish Singh Khehar. He was administered the oath of office by President Ram Nath Kovind during a brief ceremony in the Darbar Hall of Rashtrapati Bhawan.

As judge of the Supreme Court, Justice Misra has delivered a number of crucial judgments.

The swearing-in was also attended by sitting and former judges of the apex court, including former Chief Justices of India - Justice T.S. Thakur, Justice R.M. Lodha, Justice K.G. Balakrishnan and Justice A.M. Ahmadi.

Outgoing CJI JS Khehar had recommended his name as his successor last month. He was transferred to the Madhya Pradesh High Court shortly before he became a permanent judge in 1997.

Meanwhile, political leaders welcomed Justice Dipak Mishra as the new Chief Justice of India and congratulated him over his appointment.

On Oct 10, 2011, Mishra was appointed to the Supreme Court.

He was appointed the Chief Justice of the Patna High Court in 2009 and headed Delhi High Court in 2010. Memon, who was convicted in the 1993 Mumbai blasts that killed 257 people, had given the last-minute appeal in July 2015 on the day before he was to be hanged.

In May, Misra also upheld the death sentence of the four convicts in the heinous 2012 Delhi gang-rape case. In 1996, he rose up to the ranks of additional judge of the Orissa High Court.

Mishra drew flak after he ordered that it will be mandatory for all cinema halls to play national anthem before the start of every movie.
