South Africa's Zuma survives no-confidence vote with party backing

Zuma 75 will be stepping down as ANC party leader in December and as president ahead of the 2019 general election South Africa's Zuma survives no-confidence vote with party backing

Deputy Chief Whip of the ANC, Dorris Eunice Dlakude, welcomed the decision by National Assembly speaker Baleka Mbete for a secret ballot and went into the debate calling the Democratic Alliance "hypocrites".

Ahead of this afternoon's motion of no confidence in President Jacob Zuma, final comments were given by both the ANC and opposition parties on why MPs should vote to keep Zuma in power as president of the country or vote him out.

Earlier, Malema said the Economic Freedom Fighters were imploring ANC MPs to understand that the opposition was not trying to overthrow a democratically elected government but to rid South Africa of a president who had handed power to the Gupta family, thereby letting unelected persons dictate to government.

Themba Godi of The African People's Convention, who is also the head of the standing committee of public accounts in the National Assembly, said: "We will vote in support of good governance and against corruption ..."

At the time, she said she had no authority in law or in terms of the rules of Parliament to determine that a secret ballot be used. So a minimum of 55 members of the ruling party would need to defect to pass a motion of no confidence in the president.

Opposition to Zuma's rule, however, has been growing amid revelations of corruption and influence peddling, even as the economy has faltered and unemployment has remained stubbornly high in a country marked by deep inequalities of wealth.

The ANC had its worst showing past year in municipal elections as Zuma faced allegations of corruption.

"There are real concerns that the president and those closest to him have undermined those institutions, that they have captured those institutions and they have effectively paralyzed them so that they are too scared to act", said Susan Comrie, an investigative journalist with AmaBhungane, the non-profit group that exposed the emails.

But the motion, called amid repeated allegations of corruption, was defeated by 198 votes to 177. The president was playing "Russian roulette" with the economy, according to the DA leader, Mmusi Maimane. "A corrupt system that keeps our people imprisoned in poverty. But here we are".

"The failed motion of no confidence reinforces the status quo", Kotze said by phone from Pretoria, the capital.

Although Zuma has survived this battle, he is still fighting for his political future. He will however continue in the post of president till the next presidential elections that take place in 2019.

Zuma is backing the former foreign affairs minister, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma - his ex-wife. Opponents within the party are largely rallying behind Ramaphosa, although there are other names in the mix.
