South Korea joint drills may bring catastrophe to region, says Pyongyang

Christy Curtis | 19 August, 2017, 03:29

Both officials condemned North Korea's second intercontinental ballistic missile test on July 28 and agreed to coordinate closely on responding to the threat from Pyongyang, the Pentagon said in a statement.

Speculation has also emerged that the allies may scale back the scope of the upcoming joint military exercise, a proposal earlier made by South Korean president's special adviser Moon Chung-in who said South Korea would consult the idea with the USA in exchange for suspension of the North's nuclear activities.

"But wrong actions on the Taiwan issue, the United States deploying the THAAD system around China, US ships and aircraft's activities in the South China Sea, the United States close-in surveillance in the sea and air near China have had a large, negative influence on bilateral military ties and mutual trust", Fan added.

He said: " The most important task at hand is for the U.S. and North Korea to "hit the brakes" on their mutual needling of each other with words and actions, to lower the temperature of the tense situation and prevent the emergence of an "August crisis". "I can confidently say there will not be a war again on the Korean Peninsula".

A military solution to the North Korean missile threat would be "horrific" but allowing Pyongyang to develop the capability to launch a nuclear attack on the United States is "unimaginable", the top US military officer said Thursday in Beijing.

Kim told Guterres the resolution "constitutes a flagrant infringement upon (North Korea's) sovereignty and an open challenge to it". "But we don't need to be impatient", he said.

Ambassador Kim accused the United States of instigating the latest U.N. sanctions against North Korea to "isolate and stifle" the country and completely block its economic development and improve "the people's livelihood".

Mr Trump tweeted on Wednesday that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un had "made a very wise and well reasoned decision", amid indications that he does not immediately plan to fire multiple missiles toward Guam.

"I do believe right now - there's a long way to go - but we are on a path that there is a possibility, and I hope a probability, that we can resolve this peacefully", he said.

"We both know that you and President Trump are committed to our improvement in military-to-military relations and we have approached it with great commitment, candour and we certainly want to deliver results", Dunford told Xi in opening remarks. "That is unacceptable, and that is what President [Donald J.] Trump has said", the chairman said. "North Korea is nearing a threshold for the red line", Moon said.

The United States has expressed concern about what it calls unsafe intercepts of U.S. aircraft by the Chinese air force and a lack of transparency in military spending by China, which is in the midst of an ambitious military modernisation programme.
