The sacking of VK Sasikala, who is in a Bengaluru prison in a corruption case, as the party's chief was an important demand of Team OPS for the merger.

February 14: The Supreme Court "restored in full" the trial court judgment convicting Sasikala in the 21-year-old disproportionate assets case and directed her to serve the remaining part of her four-year jail term.

There was no mention of jailed AIADMK General Secretary V.K. Sasikala in the press statement. Meanwhile, sidelined AIADMK deputy general secretary TTV Dinakaran held deliberations with supporters at his residence here.

As many as 17 AIADMK MLAs are loyal to them.

The third time Paneerselvam took reins of the Chief Ministerial post was after Jayalalithaa's demise - an event that left Tamil Nadu in a political turmoil. These steps would be a prerequisite to reclaiming the party's Two Leaves symbol.

Former Chief Minister and faction leader O Panneerselvam was also sworn in as the Deputy Chief Minister of the state the same day while he also set to get back his finance portfolio. Nearly simultaneously the Raj Bhavan also announced that OPS and K. Pandiarajan would be inducted into the cabinet.

Earlier on Saturday, the veteran leader of the O Panneerselvam faction and former minister KP Munuswamy had finally rejected the allegations which were being said that they were stopping both the factions to stay together. The OPS camp has also insisted on a serving judge to probe Jayalalithaa's death. "No one can separate us, we are children of Amma (Jayalalithaa), and we are brothers", Panneerselvam said. "Heading to party office, expect good news", S Semallai, leader of the OPS faction told ANI. One faction led by Chief Minister Palaniswamy and the other by former Chief Minister and rebel leader O Pannerselvam.

Chief Minister Palaniswami while addressing the joint press conference to formally announce the merger said that a core committee headed by OPS, with joint-coordinators and 11 members will be setup to guide the party in future.

Though the merger was expected to materialise on Friday night, it did not come through amid reported divergent views among the members of the Panneerselvam faction.

Sources said the two factions could announce the merger after the AIADMK meeting.

As per AIADMK party bylaws, the general secretary can not be removed by a resolution passed by a committee or group of office bearers.

That was not announced today but party sources said it will happen soon.
