The NFL Is Suspending Vontaze Burfict 5 Games For An Illegal Hit

Bengals' Vontaze Burfict facing 5-game suspension Noted dirty player Vontaze Burfict suspended 5 games for dirty hit

Burfict, who has a history of illegal hits, violated one of the NFL's new rules which states a defender cannot hit the running back in a defenseless posture. "I helped him up and he said he was good and I asked if he was good on the next series and he said, 'Yeah, that was a legal hit'".

Burfict is appealing, and he has a hearing with the National Football League next week, sources told ESPN. The veteran linebacker is entering the final year of his contract with the Bengals this season.

Considering Adam Jones is already suspended for the first game of the year for violating the league's personal conduct policy, Cincinnati's defense will have to figure out how to survive without two of its best players.

As for Burfict, he would lose out on over $800k of game checks, but that's nothing compared to what he could be losing in free agency.

Burfict might have a tough time in appeal, given his history with penalties for illegal hits. You can see video of the hit below. "The club will support Vontaze in the appeal process", the team statement said. Burfict returned an interception 62 yards for a touchdown in Sunday's preseason loss to the Washington Redskins 23-17. He was suspended for the first three games of the 2016 season for a nasty hit that knocked Pittsburgh Steelers star receiver Antonio Brown out of the 2015 wild card matchup between the AFC North rivals.

This news comes after one of Burfict's best preseason games, too.

Since then he's appeared in just 26 of a possible 48 games and is going to miss his third straight Opening Day.
